Vision Girls: Spotlight
News. events. thoughts.
My name is Chelsea, and I never intended to be a youth mentor/coach but I feel I was called to stand in the gap for Tacoma's girls. Vision of Eastside is a culmination of years of volunteerism with girls in Tacoma, WA and Milwaukee, WI. I have become a friend, a second mom, a guardian of hopes and so many other things over the past 10 years.
The step team is very special to me. I have always marched to the beat of my own drum and growing up I didn't have many friends. I lacked the social skills to sustain friendships. That was... until I joined my high school step team. We laughed, we performed and we fought, but through it all we remained sisters. We supported each other and those girls taught me that it was okay to be my ever-weird, spunky self.
It is my goal that every girl, at every level of involvement experiences a moment of self-actualization and self-acceptance. By the end of six months, it is my goal that the girls start to make new friends and deeper levels of friendship that go beyond the playground. I am so excited to build community and friendships through the art of stepping in Tacoma. This opportunity is more than a dream come true for me and I am so humbled and honored to be doing this work.
Going forward the blog is going to be very different, as I will be showcasing the girls from all of the Vision Step Team programs. I think it is important for girls to use both their spoken and written word to communicate how they feel. With your help, and comments, the girls will begin to see how their words affect others and how effective their words on a given topic can be. Some of my girls are as young as 4 years old and some are 17, but all of them have something to say and I am so excited to facilitate an outlet for them.
Be on the look out for our next blog, that should be coming around the first week of November.
Each week, girls from different groups will showcase their voice on our team blog "Our Vision". Parents and community friends are encouraged to leave comments so the girls can see how their voice/words affects others. Look out y'all the girls have something to say!!
